What Erdoğan Achieved After Backing Sweden

Turkey agrees back Sweden's NATO membership.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Turkey, achieved a number of things after agreeing to back Sweden for NATO membership. These include:

  • Regaining some leverage over the European Union. Turkey has been a long-standing applicant for EU membership, but its accession process has been stalled for many years. By blocking Sweden's NATO membership, Erdoğan was able to put pressure on the EU to reopen negotiations on Turkey's accession.
  • Reinforcing Turkey's security. Turkey shares a long border with Syria and Iraq, where Kurdish militant groups are active. By getting Sweden to agree to crack down on Kurdish groups, Erdoğan has strengthened Turkey's security against these threats.
  • Boosting his domestic popularity. Erdoğan is facing a number of challenges at home, including a weakening economy and rising inflation. By securing Sweden's NATO membership, Erdoğan has been able to score a major political victory that will boost his popularity among Turkish voters.

In addition to these specific achievements, Erdoğan's decision to back Sweden's NATO membership also sends a broader message to the world. It shows that Turkey is still a powerful player in the region, and that it is not afraid to use its veto power to advance its interests.

Here are some of the specific things that Erdoğan got in return for backing Sweden's NATO membership:

  • Sweden agreed to change its laws to make it easier to extradite suspected terrorists to Turkey.
  • Sweden agreed to expand its counter-terrorism cooperation with Turkey.
  • Sweden agreed to resume arms exports to Turkey.
  • NATO agreed to create a new post of "Special Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism" at NATO.
  • Turkey agreed to lift its veto on Sweden's NATO membership.

It is still too early to say what the long-term implications of Erdoğan's decision will be. However, it is clear that he has achieved a number of short-term goals, and that he has strengthened Turkey's position in the region.
